Cabo Verde, a country off the West coast of Africa, was certified malaria free by the World Health Organization and is one of only eight countries in Africa to receive this honor. This is the result of a partnership between the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria and multiple government agencies. Together, they invested in stronger health systems and in collection of data regarding region specific methods to prevent malaria alongside research on malaria vectors. Researchers and workers on the ground believe that reducing malaria has led to large gains in GDP, which in turn, made malaria elimination easier.

Power of Love, has been working in Zambia’s most vulnerable communities for 20+ years. We have seen what happens when families sleep under insecticide treated bed nets during the malaria season. When communities have the knowledge to prevent disease and insecticide treated bed nets, we see fewer clinic visits, fewer missed school and workdays, income stabilization, and more resilient families.

Cabo Verde has inspired us to double down our efforts to eradicate malaria from Zambia. At this time we are raising funds to provide 10,000 long lasting insecticide-treated bed nets and training and education to families most vulnerable to malaria such as children under five, pregnant women, people with HIV or TB, and the elderly. The provision of 10,000 nets will protect 35,000 children or 20,000 adults. Every $5 provides a net and training to a family.

The World Health Organization certified Surinam as a malaria free country last month - the first country in the Amazon region to receive this certification. This milestone is the result of nearly 70 years of commitment by the government and people of Suriname to eliminate malaria across its vast rainforests and diverse communities. Our goal and dream is for Zambia, one of the top 20 countries with the highest malaria incidence and mortality rates, to be certified as malaria free in the next three years.

The most cost-effective method to prevent malaria and other vector borne diseases is the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets. To put Zambia on the path to being malaria free, our plan is to provide education on malaria prevention and 10,000 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets next month, ahead of the next malaria season. The provision of 10,000 bed nets will benefit approximately 20,000 adults or 35,000 children. Primary beneficiaries will be young children, individuals living with HIV and/or TB, pregnant women, and older adults in rural, peri-urban, and urban resource-limited settings. With better health, there will be a stabilization of income as families have fewer visits to clinics, fewer missed work days, and children can attend school regularly.

In addition to the planned provision of nets next September, we are raising funds for an additional 10,000 long lasting insecticide treated nets. Help us get to our goal by donating generously.
