In 2024, new tools—including the first malaria vaccines and dual-ingredient nets—prevented an estimated 170 million cases and 1 million deaths. However, due to biological and environmental factors, total cases rose to 282 million, and 610,000 people died of malaria in 2024. The death rate is currently three times higher than the global target due to the huge funding gap (only 42% of the funds required are currently invested) between what is required to reach 2030 elimination targets and current investment in malaria prevention. In addition, 95% of all malaria deaths occur in the WHO African Region with most deaths occurring in children under 5 years old.
Our malaria prevention initiative in Zambia, —focused on the provision of education and long lasting insecticide treated nets - is exactly the type of community-level response needed to reduce the incidence of malaria and keep families healthy.
In 2026, our plan is to provide 5,000 long lasting insecticide treated nets and education on malaria prevention. This will keep 10,000 adults or 17,000-20,000 children malaria free as each net can sleep up to four young children or two adults. Any investment in malaria prevention results in huge returns as healthy children and adults miss fewer days of work or school, resulting in more educated communities, and stable incomes.
Thank you for keeping children and families safe from malaria.
