In Zambia, malaria season runs from October to May. Accordingly, provision of long-lasting insecticide treated nets and education on malaria is held during this time. In the first three months of 2022, 10,000 mosquito bed nets and education were provided in four rural and five urban areas in Zambia. Regular use of these nets will benefit 35,000 children or 20,000 adults as each net can sleep up to four young children or two adults.
Tne need for nets continues to be huge as transmission rates for malaria are high in the entire country, government clinics do not provide nets, and most people cannot afford to purchase nets for their families. In rural areas, the problem is compounded due to stagnant water especially in villages located close to rivers, and lack of accessibility of government clinics that could be 25-30 miles from villages. This makes it difficult for villagers to access treatment in case they contract malaria. Sleeping under a net regularly during malaria season prevents malaria reducing the need for clinic visits.
For 2022, our goal is to provide 20,000 long lasting insecticide treated nets and education benefitting 70,000 children or 20,000 adults. This will go a long way in reducing the incidence of malaria and keeping vulnerable Zambians healthy. Our vision is for Zambia to be malaria free in the next 2-3 years. Help us make this a reality.
