Project of the Month Update: June 2015

Dear Project of the Month Club,

The last few months have been an incredibly busy time here in Washington, D.C. We’ve been working tirelessly with more than 70 of our partners responding to the Nepal earthquake, and more than 37,000 GlobalGivers in 111 countries have raised more than $4.2 million for relief efforts. More than 260 organizations are getting their start on GlobalGiving through our latest Open Challenge. And of course, we’ve got a brand-new earth-changing project to share with you this month!

Last month, 207 of you raised $6,664 to support Equip Manyatta’s Drama, Dance, Music, & Sport for Kisumu Youth project in Kenya. Thanks to your support, their project will have the financial stability to keep more girls and boys in school for the upcoming year.

This month your donations will support Empowering Women Through Design In Rural Peru, a project by Awamaki that trains and supports more than 100 rural women artisans, and helps connect them to international markets.

Kennedy Leavens, Awamaki’s executive director, has this message for you:

“Wow! This is amazing news! Thank you so much for choosing Awamaki for your project this month. I deeply admire your commitment to participate in the Club and regularly give to small projects like ours. By pooling your funds you make a huge difference, and I hope that knowing this brings you great joy. Please, if you ever find yourself in Peru, come visit! We are right on the way to Machu Picchu and we would love to show you our work and say thank you in person.”

And she has a great plan for putting your support to use:

“I know exactly how the sum of $6600 can help our project! We work with eight women's cooperatives, and our goal is to use our income-generating programs to give the women the skills they need to run their own businesses. Our most advanced cooperative is a group of knitters. We are preparing them to graduate from our training program so that they can sell their work to any knitwear client, and not just to our local store.

“We have never graduated a group before, and so we don't know exactly what trainings and costs will be required to get them started as an independent business. Costs could range from paying a lawyer to help them register with the national tax authority, to giving them extra trainings on color trends and product design so that they can make marketable products to sell.

“We often write grants to pay for training costs, but since we have never graduated a group before, and we don't know what will be required, we haven't been able to secure funds to help them with this final part of the program. These funds will give us the flexibility to pay for whatever we discover that the group needs and most importantly, to make mistakes and experiment so that we can learn the best way to launch a women's group as an independent business, so that we can replicate this with other women's groups in the region.”

Project of the Month Update: May 2015

Dear Project of the Month Club,

We're so close to summer here in Washington, D.C. and that can only mean one thing: bring on the heat. I'll tell you something pretty cool, though: your impactful donations to GlobalGiving's Project of the Month Club are bringing meaningful change to powerful nonprofits around the world.

In April, 214 of you gave an astounding, $6,649 to support "Help Costa Rican Locals Care for 10,000 Mangroves", run by Fundacion Neotropica in Costa Rica. They support community groups working for mangrove tree conservation and environmental sustainability in Costa Rica.

This month, your donations are going to "Drama, Dance, Music, & Sport for Kisumu Youth", a project by Equip Manyatta in Kenya. Through this project, children growing up in slums in Kenya have the opportunity to explore avenues they wouldn't otherwise be able to, like music and sports.

From Keevan, co-chair at Equip Manyatta:

"We at Equip Manyatta and the Mayatta Youth Resource Center are so honored and humbled to be selected as a Project of the Month this May at GlobalGiving! Being chosn really gives us a much-needed boost and we thank you for your generosity in supporting organizations like ours across the globe."

So what does a youth resource center in the slums of Kenya do with about $6,500? Keevan's got an idea or two:

"These funds will ensure that the girls and boys who are relying on us for educational support this year will be able to stay in school for sure. Our senior team's provincial campaign will not be interrupted due to lack of funding, and our younger players will be able to participate in tournaments that provide the life experience of working cooperatively. Our recording studio can produce more music, creating employment. This will allow us the financial stability we have often struggled to achieve, and provide the cushion we need while we pursue grants and other long-term funding opportunities."

Project of the Month Update: April 2015

The cherry blossoms are blooming here in Washington, D.C. and we're as excited to welcome the refreshing, breezy weather as you are. But do you know what's even more beautiful than Washington's world-famous cherry blossoms? That's right: the impact your donations are making for powerful nonprofits.

In March, 207 of you gave a total of $6,724 to support “Homeless Animals Hospital”, a project by Romania Animal Rescue, which provides veterinary care to homeless animals as well as the pets of impoverished people in Romania. In fact, our in-the-field traveler Kelly Z. visited recently!

This month, your donations are going to "Help Costa Rican Locals Care for 10,000 Mangroves", a project by Fundacion Neotropica in Costa Rica! Neotropica supports community groups in Costa Rica working for mangrove tree conservation.

From Karla, one of Neotropica's project leaders:

"We are very happy and honored for this opportunity! We work really hard every day to make a difference in our coasts, with local people. The Pacific part of our country, especially the south part in the Osa Peninsula, is one of the poorest (economically), but also, one of the richest (environmentally), and because of that we have devoted our work to it (for 30 years now!). Mangrove conservation can be a hard task, but it is very much needed to ensure nature conservation, climate change adaptation and human wellbeing."

Wondering how your donations will be used to support Neotropica this month? Karla didn't miss a beat when I asked her.

"With this donation we will be able to establish a new mangrove nursery in the Nicoya Gulf, and work a transfer process between fishermen from both sites, Osa Peninsula and Nicoya Gulf. This will allow us to start our conservation process in a completely new area and empower new local groups."
