Over 600 Beneficiaries Treated by Project Harar!

By Rebecca Wing | Fundraising Officer

Ayantu Before Surgery
Ayantu Before Surgery

Over the last year Project Harar has seen major growth and development. Our patient numbers have increased by 46% from the previous year and knowledge of our work is spreading across the Somali region through our DFiD run Cleft Programme.

We have continued our work in Oromia and are finding that more Ethiopians are now seeking out Project Harar to help with treating their facial disfigurement.

What Project Harar's Ethiopian outreach team achieved in 2015:

  • 604 were treated successfully*
  • 86% were aged 18 years or younger at the time of being seen, with an average age of 8.
  • 38 were located in the new SNNPR region that we hope to move into 2016

*Some beneficiaries are unable to undergo treatment due to ill health or malnutrition as it would put them at risk in surgery. Project Harar tries to ensure they receive future treatment.

Ayantu (pictured below) was only one and a half years old when our outreach team brought her and her mother to Addit Hiwot Hospital in November to fix her Cleft Lip.

Ayantu and her family live in the Babille district in East Hararghe, 30km away from the nearest city, Harar. Our team were able to transport them along with 10 other people from the surrounding area. We provided them with food and accommodation throughout the mission so Ayantu was able to undergo surgery without burdening her family with any additional costs.

The support we receive is vital in ensuring that children and young people, like Ayantu, can access the surgeries on offer so she may grow up and attend school, find work or start a family, without the health complications that come with having a cleft condition. We thank you once again for your generous donations.
