This project is dedicated to empowering young people from poor families in southern Mozambique through education. The project will facilitate increased access to vocational training, which will enable young people to become successful and self-sufficient. We aim to provide 18 students (11 girls and 7 boys) with access to non-university tertiary education, which will not only directly benefit the young people but will create lasting improvements to their families' quality of life.
Many young people do not have access to comprehensive education in Mozambique. While the primary school completion rate is 77%, enrollment in tertiary education rests at 7%. A young person's socioeconomic status often determines their access to higher levels of education due to inaccessible enrollment fees and other related costs of education.
Our project will provide 18 young people from rural Mozambique the opportunity to enroll and succeed in higher education. The project will finance the enrollment fees and tuition for educational courses and provide support for food, transportation, and school supplies. The courses range from teacher training to nursing to water and sanitation management. Each student will work with a project coordinator, who will ensure the young person's success and help with any issues that may arise.
The 18 students will gain access to a higher level of education, which will impact their employment, income, and future opportunities. Their families will also indirectly benefit from the intervention through increased family income and quality of life. An estimated five people make up each students family unit, which would denote a positive impact on approximately 90 people. The project will also raise awareness about the importance of education in the fight to overcome poverty in Mozambique.
