Protecting Chimpanzees - April Report

By Camilla Capel | Development Executive

For over 25 years, our conservation field partners in Guinea have served as frontline guardians for West African chimpanzees in the HautNiger National Park (HNNP).

As 2026 gets underway, the mission is evolving from a sanctuaryfocused project into a powerful, communityled movement to protect one of the last strongholds of this critically endangered species. Current support provides care for 63 rescued orphans while safeguarding a wild population of approximately 500 chimpanzees.

Empowering Local Leaders
The goal moving forward is to ensure that conservation is rooted within the local community rather than dependent on external intervention. To achieve this, our partners are launching a transformative shift in educational outreach. Instead of limiting efforts to school visits, the team is training 40 local teachers and headteachers to independently deliver high-quality environmental lessons. More than 1,100 students across 19 schools are expected to benefit this year. For young people outside the formal school system, Nature Clubs in nine remote villages offer handson conservation activities.

The “Book of Life”
A total of 1,000 educational booklets are being distributed to help children share their knowledge with their families, turning every student into a conservation ambassador.

Sustainable Livelihoods
Effective conservation relies on supporting local communities. In 2026, alternative livelihood programmes are being scaled up to reduce dependence on destructive forest activities such as illegal logging and hunting.

  • Apiculture (Beekeeping): Over 60 modern Kenyan beehives are being monitored, generating sustainable income from honey and reducing the incentive to cut trees.
  • Empowering Women: The Komoya women’s gardening group is being strengthened, providing opportunities to grow and sell vegetables to local markets, creating a stable income that diverts families from illegal trade.
  • EcoFriendly Farming: Sustainable rice cultivation is being expanded across 4.5 hectares outside sensitive habitats, while 1,000 cashew trees are maintained to restore degraded soil and offer longterm economic value.

Protection and the Front Line
Our partners are the only organisation offering permanent, ontheground operational support to park authorities in the northern sector of the HNNP.

  • Smart Patrols: Ecoguards are being trained in GPS and SMART monitoring tools to track wildlife systematically and respond to threats such as illegal mining or encroachment.
  • A Sanctuary for Justice: As Guinea’s only chimpanzee sanctuary, this enables authorities to enforce wildlife laws confidently, ensuring confiscated orphans receive worldclass care.

Why Your Support Matters
Our conservation field partners in Guinea are a deeply local organisation employing 30 Guinean staff who work tirelessly in one of West Africa’s most challenging remote landscapes. Supporting this work in 2026 means investing in a locally anchored conservation model that ensures both the chimpanzees and the people of Guinea can thrive together for generations to come.
