Summary

The project will seek to build the capacities of girls in rural areas to seek education and health through conducting counselling sessions and livelihood support. The project will further establish support clubs and conduct community meetings, small group and family centred discussions with tradition leaders, local based groups and families addressing social and traditional factors that exacerbate the practice of early and forced marriages among girls.

Challenge

The organisation intends to implement a project in rural areas; addressing the high incidences of early and forced marriages, owing to negative traditional beliefs that hinder girls to seek health, education and gender equality. In these areas; child marriages is a traditional act perpetrated by; traditional leaders due to community acceptance to this practice. As such about 780 girls are affected and have no opportunity to choose whether, when, and with whom to engage in sexual activity.

Solution

The project will; Train the 780 girls in seeking education, health, and gender equality. Conduct community meetings, small group and family centred discussions with tradition leaders, local based groups and families addressing negative social and traditional factors affecting girls. Establish and operationalise community based support groups in all project areas. Provide effective referral services to clinics and victim Support Units of the police for criminalisation of perpetrators.

Long-Term Impact

The project will have the following results; Improved capacity of 780 girls in mitigating the challenges of early and forced marriages. 780 girls at risk of early and forced marriages participate more in decisions that affect them 780 girls are able to avoid early pregnancy and to refuse unwanted sex. 60% of early marriage survivors seeking help from established support groups Increased knowledge and understanding of traditional leaders on the dangers of early and forced marriages
