Protecting the Health of Colombian Orphans

Today we want to share with you the story of Sebastian who arrived at Fundacion CRAN at the end of May, two days after being born. He was a premature baby since his mother, an indigenous woman from a community located in the Coffee Zone of Colombia, being pregnant was uprooted from her territory and could not access the necessary prenatal controls. Nor could she count on the traditional accompaniment of a midwife from her community. In addition, she faced the challenge of speaking only her native language and not being able to communicate in Spanish with the doctors who treated her at the hospital when she arrived in labor. By identifying these difficulties and not having the ideal conditions for Sebastian's care, it was decided to put him in temporary protection and turn him over to CRAN to guarantee his recovery.

The baby was hospitalized 31 days during which he required permanent accompaniment of a caregiver, diapers and toiletries. He was discharged with oxygen 24 hours a day. His recovery has been satisfactory, in the words of Pamela, our volunteer from the United States: “Sebastian looks more awake and exploring his surroundings. It has been very gratifying to see him grow so much, smiling more and receiving so much love from all the caretakers. Currently, he only requires oxygen to drink a bottle and when he goes out to attend his medical appointments and to follow up the process at the family station. ”

Part of the contributions we receive through the health project has been used to cover the expenses of his medical appointments with specialists, transportation costs and the portable oxygen bullet that you must use for each outing, which needs to be replaced every 2 weeks and it is not covered by the mandatory health system. 

Thanks to your contributions, today Sebastian and other children like him breathe better and our team has the peace of mind of being able to cover the costs associated with hospitalizations of children like him who does not cover the mandatory health system in Colombia.

Hoy queremos compartir contigo la historia de Sebastián que llegó a Fundación CRAN a finales de mayo con 2 días de nacido. Fue un bebé prematuro ya que su madre, una mujer indígena de una comunidad localizada en la zona Cafetera de Colombia, estando embarazada fue desarraigada de su territorio y no pudo acceder a los controles prenatales necesarios.  Tampoco pudo contar con el acompañamiento tradicional de una partera de su comunidad. Además, se enfrentó al desafío de hablar únicamente su lengua nativa y no poder comunicarse en español con los médicos que la atendieron en el hospital cuando llegó en trabajo de parto. Al identificar estas dificultades y que no se contaba con las condiciones idóneas para el cuidado de Sebastián, se decidió ponerlo en protección temporal y entregarlo a CRAN para garantizar su recuperación.

El bebé estuvo hospitalizado 31 días durante los cuales requirió acompañamiento permanente de una cuidadora, pañales y elementos de aseo.  Fue dado de alta con oxígeno 24 horas. Su evolución ha sido satisfactoria, en palabras de Pamela nuestra voluntaria de los Estados Unidos: “Sebastián se ve más despierto y explorando su entorno. Ha sido muy gratificante verlo crecer tanto, sonriendo más y recibiendo tanto amor de todas las cuidadoras. Actualmente, sólo requiere oxígeno para tomar tetero y cuando sale a asistir a sus citas médicas y de seguimiento del proceso en la comisaría de familia”.

Parte de las contribuciones que recibimos a través del proyecto de salud se ha utilizado para cubrir los gastos de sus citas médicas con especialistas, los costos de transporte y la bala de oxígeno portátil que debe utilizar para cada salida, que necesita reemplazarse cada 2 semanas y no la cubre el sistema de salud obligatorio. 

Gracias a tus contribuciones, hoy Sebastián y otros niños como él respiran mejor y nuestro equipo tiene la tranquilidad de poder cubrir los costos asociados a las hospitalizaciones de niños como él que no cubre el sistema de salud obligatorio en Colombia.
