Restoring Dignity for Children Living with Abinism

By Ikechukwu Kelechukwu | Project Lead

Project Update: Protecting Lives & Restoring Dignity for Children Living with Albinism in Nigeria

We are excited to share the first update on our life-saving initiative supporting women and children living with albinism in Nigeria—and why your support is urgently needed now more than ever.

Across underserved communities, children with albinism continue to face extreme health risks, stigma, and exclusion. Without access to sun protection, healthcare, and education, many are left vulnerable to preventable conditions like skin cancer, visual impairment, and social isolation.

Urgent Need: Life-Saving Protection & Care

Since launching this project, we have engaged with families who shared heartbreaking realities:

  • Children forced to stay indoors, missing school due to fear of sun exposure

  • Women experiencing discrimination, rejection, and emotional distress

  • Families unable to afford basic sunscreen, protective clothing, or medical care

This is why our intervention focuses on urgent, high-impact support that aligns with GlobalGiving priorities such as:
Health equity, child protection, women empowerment, access to education, community development, and human rights & inclusion.

What Your Support Will Deliver

With your donation, we are scaling a holistic, community-based solution that includes:

  • Distribution of medical-grade sunscreen, UV-protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses

  • Access to free skin cancer screening, dermatology care, and basic eye care services

  • Education support for children (school enrollment, supplies, inclusive learning support)

  • Psychosocial support for women, caregivers, and affected families

  • Community awareness campaigns to fight stigma, myths, and discrimination

Why This Matters Now

Nigeria has one of the highest populations of people living with albinism in Africa, yet access to dermatological care and sun protection remains extremely limited. Without intervention:

  • Skin cancer remains a leading cause of early death among people with albinism

  • Children drop out of school, losing their future opportunities

  • Women and families remain trapped in cycles of poverty and exclusion

A Message to Our Supporters

Every contribution—no matter how small—helps us move closer to a future where:

  • No child dies from preventable skin cancer

  • Every girl and boy with albinism can attend school safely

  • Women can live with dignity, confidence, and equal opportunity

Join Us: Be a Lifeline Today

Your donation today will:

  • Protect a child from harmful UV exposure

  • Provide access to life-saving healthcare

  • Restore hope to families who feel forgotten
