Bringing Clean Water to SMPN 2 Mollo Selatan

By Mel | Individual Giving Coordinator

In East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), a severe water crisis leaves up to 70% of the region struggling with prolonged droughts. For schools, this challenge is critical: roughly 50% to 60% of rebuilt schools in the area lack running water, relying instead on costly water vendors or asking students to carry heavy jerry cans from home.

At SMPN 2 Mollo Selatan in Timor Tengah Selatan Regency, the daily struggle for water deeply disrupted learning. Buying water every two weeks drained school funds, yet supplies ran out quickly. Students and teachers were forced to visit nearby homes just to use the toilet, and female students often had to go home to manage personal hygiene during menstruation.

Despite harsh drilling conditions in the rocky terrain, Happy Hearts Indonesia, together with generous donors like you, successfully installed a complete water system featuring a borehole, storage tank, tower, and piping network directly connected to the school’s facilities.

The immediate impact at school:

  • No More Heavy Jerry Cans: Students no longer need to haul water from home every morning or leave school during class just to find a working toilet.
  • Better Health Habits: With clean water readily available, handwashing before meals and keeping toilets clean have naturally become part of the daily routine.
  • Saved Funds & Greener Grounds: The school no longer wastes money on water trucks, and students can finally water the dry plants around their school.

"Since the water access was provided, my friends and I no longer need to bring water in jerry cans every morning. Our daily activities have become much easier, especially when cleaning the classroom and washing our hands." - Kesya, Student at SMPN 2 Mollo Selatan

Where dry soil once limited what these students could achieve, your generosity helped turn the tide. Today, clean water is flowing, health is protected, and students can focus entirely on what matters most: their education.
