Some progress.

Dear Friends and Supporters.

We are still working hard to put funds in place to support our new focus project that will target 140 farmers by supporting and improving farming and agricutural practices and techniques. Funds are nearly there and we hope to get the project for Livelihood Support off the ground any time now. Our earlier trial projects and have demonstrated the big improvements that can be made through proper support and training. The sooner these small farmers can become more efficient and productive the sooner they and their families will get back to normal lives. The following is a case study gathered by our field staff as an example of what can be achieved through your support.

Chaulagain of Sipapokhare-2 is 60 years old. He has 9 members in his family. Recently, only 3 members of his family stay in the temporary home. Chaulagain started to get involved in agriculture business since 2061 B.S. Before the massive earthquake; Chaulagain’s economic conditions was good and in a progressing phase. Even he made a tank where he collected water for irrigation use. After the earthquake; Chaulagain is using water pipes for irrigation purpose. The earthquake disrupted his livelihood opportunities. Chaulagain’s family relies heavily on farming.

With the intervention undertaken by ICCO/Act Alliance to recover the livelihood opportunities of 12 farmers from Sipapokhare VDCs of Sindhupalchowk . Nepal Trust (NT) being local implementing partner supported Chaulagain with seeds of cauliflower, tomato, long beans and cabbage, plastic tunnel, spray machine, pesticides, sprinkle, pipes, watering jug, scissors to continue his disrupted livelihood.

Chaulagain received assistance to start plastic tunnel farming. After months of hard work in the farm, his hard effort has finally paid off. His farm now flourishes with cauliflower plants. Chaulagain mentions “Agriculture helps in being independent and improve livelihood”. The initiative is expected to recover the disrupted livelihood of Chaulagain in more improved and productive manner. As for the rest of his crops, they are in the process on production.

Meanwhile our work to completely rebuild the Kalika school (see previous reports) has now been completed and handed over to the education authorities. Last month donors from Rotary International (RI) made a visit to see the finished project and were very impressed. The Trust has built a number of new schools in earthquake prone areas and there is little doubt that many more will be required as the full effect of the earthquake becomes apparent. All are rebuilt to government approved earthquake resistance standards.

All at the Nepal Trust want to thank our supporters and donors for all you have done to help this project and bring fresh hope back in to the lives of these hardworking and resourcful mountain people. There is some light at the end of the tunnel but we all need your continued support to finish the job. A slight change of direction.

It is now four and a half years since the horrendous earthquake in Nepal that wrecked so many communities and took thousands of lives. The world has moved on a bit and fresh disasters have taken over the headlines and demand for support. However, it doesn't mean that all the problems and issues have gone away; there is still much to do.

The Nepal Trust has worked hard to improve conditions in the worst hit district of Sindupalchowk first of all providing emergency living accommodation, temporary schools and help to improve economic conditions and get communities back on their feet as quickly as possible. This approach has had a significant impact. Many children are now benefitting from nice shiny new schools. New irrigation systems are providing a healthy water supply and providing much needed water to improved farms.Veterinary services have improved the health of farm stock and the economic health of their owner farmers.

We feel that now is the time to to change focus and plan ahead. The hill people of Nepal are very resileant and with a little bit of help can overcome most things. The government is now providing support for home rebuilding and other infrastructure support. The Trust will focus on economic support for 140 farmers and their families in the Rural Municipalities of Helambu/Kiul, Kunchok, Nawalpur, Sipapokhare and Syaule. We have already demonstrated how this approach is successful where previous help and support has generated much interest with other farmers who recognise the benefits from new and improved farming systems. We hope to have this new project approach fully up and running in early 2020.

As you are all partners in this project I hope you are in agreement with the proposal and see the advantage of taking a more economic driven approach that will more quickly heal the traumas of the earthquake and bring the hill people back to life again. They will do it with your help!

A continued need.

Dear Friends and Supporters.

As reported on previously we faced some challenges with the final stages of the construction works at the Kalika school in Nawalparasi, which included the construction of the main building and the toilet block. After many discussions, meetings and negotiations with the Maoist group Biplav, that demanded donations and forced our workers to halt construction, we managed to come to some resolutions, whereby we were able to continue our works. Due to the delays incurred we did have to make some changes in the local work force and also had to call upon the assistance of the local school committee to help us solving the matter.

Despite all this we are pleases to inform you all that the project is now near completion and the construction works have been completed. We now are preparing to get the furniture into the school after which it can be handed over to the school committee so that the teachers and students can use the building soonest. Although some delays have been incurred, we were still able to deliver a much needed project that will help many students to have better access to much needed education.

Although the earthquake happened a few years back, the aftermath of it and the problems faced in many villages is still clearly visible. There are still many schools in the Sindhupalchowk district that are in need of repair or rebuilding. We aim in the upcoming years to have similar projects in this area and hope you are able to support us, as our work is by far not finished.

On a similar note we are preparing for a comprehensive livelihood project in the same area to support approx. 140 farming families in their agricultural activities so they can increase their family income which enables them to rebuilding their lives. We aim to support them in various aspects of this, such as irrigation support, training, vegetable production, equipment and the like. Also for this we still require additional support and we hope you can spread the word as your help and support for these vital projects would be much appreciated.
