Agricultural Improvements

Farmer Training
Farmer Training

The massive earthquake of two years ago which destroyed so many lives and livelihoods is almost a distant memory to many of us. Not so for the unfortunate villagers of the Nepal Himalayas who still have to bear the consequences of this devastation as they struggle to get back to some sort of normality. The Nepal Trust is concentrating its efforts on education and infrastructural repairs to get the communities back to as normal a way of life as possible. This also includes focussing on agricultural support. Agriculture is the predominant way of life in these villages and provides an essential source of healthy food and much needed income from the sale of their products.

Our most recent programme, last month, was the training of 8 farmers from each of Chautara, Sipapokhare, Syuale,Helambu, Kunchok and Nawalpur VDCs. This training programme was carried out over a period of 6 days by approved trainers from the District Agriculture Development Office (DADO). Training involved learning new and improved agricultural techniques and vegetable growing.

We continue to supply veterinary services to help improve farm stock and raise the general level of knowledge of healthy farm animals. Three day veterinary check-ups were recently carried out in Kunchock, Nawalpur, Sipapokhare and Syaule VDCs.

Water and irrigation are essentials for life and for farmers. We are currently constructing a new irrigation scheme in Padera village, Sipapokhare VDC. The local community are enthusiastically working together to complete this project which will benefit 55 households and over 300 people.

Thank you so much for your support and we hope you will continue to help. Perhaps you can speak to your friends and colleagues about what we are doing and encourage them to help also. The destruction by the earthquake was massive and will take a long time to restore life to how it was. Imagine!

If you would like to donate, GlobalGiving are matching all donations up to 50% from April 25. This is an excellent chance to maximise your gift and make it go much further.
