Getting about in Sindalpalchowk is always difficult but the earthquake, followed by a monsoon on already unstable ground, makes it almost impossible to deliver large and bulky items. Roads are still closed and it will be a few weeks before most are reopened. Our GG funded project in Tarkegyang is affected like this but we expect the road to be opened soon to lorries so we can move ahead with the project. However, we have not been sitting around and have focussed on other villages to get urgent supplies and materials in. Two Temporary Learning Centres (TLCs) have been constructed in Kunchok VDC which has enabled children to get back to school as quickly as possible

Farmers have been supported in many ways. Fresh seed supplies, tunnel plastics, sprayers, pesticides, cultivation equipment, etc, have been supplied to many farmers to get them quickly back to what they do best. The Trust has also supplied veterinary support services to check farm animals and provide vaccinations and medicines.

Under government certified training schemes we have provided skills training for 8 stonemasons to learn earthquake resilience building methods. This will provide an established qualification for future income generation activities. Likewise we have provided a number of sewing machines to skilled operators so they can also start to earn a living again.

A new project to repair a road and electricity supply to a remote village is currently at the planning stage. A major project funded by GG to rebuild the Shree Gorkhana Primary school in Helambu VDC will get underway early in 2016 once the winter snows have cleared. All plans are prepared and ready to go.

The people affected by this tragedy are very resillient and all they require is a small lift to restart their lives.

Can co-operation build a brighter future?

Natural disasters recede fairly rapidly from the public mind as new ones take over but for the people involved it is still very much at the forefront of their minds and their daily lives. The reminder is always there when they survey their ruined homes and another aftershock jolts their senses. Immediate emergency support has been distributed although there are still many more remote areas in need of support. For small organisations, like the Nepal Trust, it is only feasible, and sensible, to focus its resources and effort to make the most impact. This disaster is huge, very widespread, and in some of the most difficult terrain on earth.

During the rebuilding phase co-operation is essential to provide a fully coordinated approach. The Trust is working with Dutch based organisations, over a two year period split in to two phases, with the Trust acting as the local coordinator. After an extensive community field assessment using satellite technology 5 VDCs in Sindalpalchowk have been identified as the main project area. These are; Sipapokhare, Kumchok, Nawalpur, Syaule, and Helambu. Altogether these VDCs include 1993 households and a population of 8609 people.

The project has identified 60 farmers who will receive help and special training to rebuild their farms and livelihoods, 8 masons will be trained in new eathquake resistant building techniques, 15 Dalit families will receive sewing machines to build local businesses. After the monsoon is over an emphasis will be placed on restoring water and irrigation schemes and rebuilding electricity supplies.The project will also encourage other organisations to provide specific project funding by providing matching grants.

Many schools were destroyed in the earthquake and it is a national priority to get as many up and running as quickly as possible. The Trust has supported the construction of three Temporary Learning Centres in Kumchok VDC. These are a special design with concrete flooring and a prefabricated metal construction to give a longer life before a more permanent solution is arrived at. It allows children to rapidly get back to a stable learning environment. We have also supplied building materials to three schools in Gorthali VDC to get them up and running again.

Helambu is a remote and beautiful area that was particularly badly hit. Global Giving gave a substantial grant towards the rebuilding of Tarkegyang village. All the materials have been purchased and await transport to site but, unfortunately, the monsoon has washed away roads and trails. As soon as these are cleared, hopefully very soon, the materials will be delivered for installation by the local community.

Working Together

The full scale of the earthquake disaster in Nepal is slowly unfolding as the more remote areas and villages are reached. Working alone is not an option and it is essential that organisations work together to maximise the effort. The Nepal Trust is working with the Nidan Hospital and an associate group of organisations to deliver emergency help. We are also working with the Integrated Self-Help Association for Rural Development (ISARD) to reach more areas and create more collaboratve linkages. The new areas include the VDCs of Bharabise, Toutali, Pangretar, Karthali, Ghorthali, Dhuskum, Chokati, Piskar, Thumpakhal. We have recently sent:

128 greenhouse plastics for shelter and food production.

3000kg of rice.

42 tarpaulins for schools, healthposts and community centres.

For now the priority remains the urgent need to provide roofing and shelter before the onset of the monsoon. A collaborative meeting on 4 June between a number of donors in the area will plan and coordinate the long-term rehabilitation operation.
