Update: Lifesaving Care for Burmese Refugees

Thank you again for generously supporting our project and helping us to provide healthcare for Burmese refugees, displaced persons, and those impacted by conflict in the region. Because of people like you, between November 2023 and January 2024 38 patients were able to receive life-saving and life-changing surgical care who otherwise would not have had access to it.

At Watsi, we have the privilege of hearing directly from each patient about how access to critical healthcare improves their quality of life, impacting not only their lives but also entire families and communities as well. We wanted to share a couple of snapshots with you of how your support was put to work over the last quarter to change lives for the better.

  • In December, 9-year-old Moe fell off a bench while playing in her classroom and fractured her left forearm. Moe's family lives in a camp for internally displaced people in Myanmar with her mother, grandmother, and siblings. After her fall, she experienced significant pain and swelling and limited mobility, but her family could not afford the surgery required to reset her fractured bones and ensure proper healing. Thankfully, Moe was connected with Watsi and our community of donors. Moe's grandmother said, "Thank you for helping my granddaughter. Our family is facing financial limitations, and affording her treatment has been challenging. Without your help, I wouldn't know how to manage to get her treated."
  • In January, 2-year-old Thaw began experiencing increasingly serious complications from a birth condition that requires a colostomy. While his family was aware of his condition, they had not been able to pursue treatment sooner due to cost constraints. Thaw's father works as an agricultural day laborer, while his mother is a homemaker. His elder brother and sister take turns working as agricultural day laborers to help make ends meet. Thaw's mother carefully manages their income, but it is only enough to cover their daily basic expenses. Thaw's mother shared, "I want my son to have a healthy, long life. I was always worried about him, and he couldn't receive treatments due to lack of money. Now, with the help of BCMF [our medical partner] and donors, he can under surgery. Thank you."

We appreciate your kindness and generosity!
