Milk - It Does a Body Good
By Vickie Lackman | Volunteer Vice President

Milk is an important part of children's diets. It provides nutritional supplements for our orphan students. There are no large grocery stores where you can purchase milk for schools. Most milk is produced on small family farms and it produces just enough for the families. By purchasing cows for our schools we can provide milk for our students. In addition, the cows will produce calves that can be raised or sold and the cow manure can be used for bio-fuel.
We work to improve the diets and nutrition for the orphan students. Milk is a powerful defense against childhood malnutirion and decreases mortality. Improved nutrition also improves educational outcomes for the children. Healthy children do better in school and an education is critical for orphans to be able to grow up and get jobs that they can support themselves and their families.

Milk - An Important Part of Orphans Diet
By Vickie Lackman | Volunteer Vice President

Orphans Africa serves milk to the orphan students, to supplement their meals but Tanzania lacks large-scale milk producers and most milk comes from family farms. To meet student needs, we buy cows, which also provide calves for raising or sale. Building the herd takes time due to costs, and cow shelters need rebuilding. Long-term, we aim to use manure for bio-gas cooking to reduce firewood and coal use. Thank you for contributing to our milk cow program, supporting student nutrition and health.
Your ongoing support not only helps us sustain daily nourishment for the children but also empowers Orphans Africa to invest in the future of our schools. With each addition to our herd and improvements to our farming operations, we move closer to self-sufficiency and create opportunities for the students to learn valuable agricultural skills. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier community where every child has the chance to thrive.

Orphans Need Milk To Drink

With your support, we can transform classrooms into spaces of hope and opportunity, where every child has the nourishment needed to learn, dream, and thrive. Each cow you help us purchase is not just a source of milk — it's a promise of a fuller future, one glass at a time.
Food security remains a critical concern in Tanzania. Children who lack adequate nutrition often face challenges concentrating in school. Consuming milk is among the healthiest options available to them; however, access is limited as water sources are frequently contaminated, increasing the risk of illness. Maintaining good health and receiving an education are essential pathways out of poverty for these children.
Milk supply is constrained primarily because most production originates from smallholder farms, which typically own only a few cows that generate just enough milk for household consumption. Recent droughts have placed additional strain on farmers, significantly impacting milk production levels.
Join us in making a lasting difference, and let’s give these children the chance they deserve.
