Dear friends and supporters,

Happy New Year!

We wish you a new year filled with peace, joy, and prosperity! We survived 2020 and thrived because of your continued support. We were able to exceed our goals and expand our services because of the generosity and commitment of people like you.

As we begin this new year, we are thrilled to inform you that Yayasan Usaha Mulia's project https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/help-promote-good-reading-habits-in-kalimantan/ has been chosen as GlobalGiving's Project of the Month for January 2021! Our project to enhance the quality of literacy and education in Central Kalimantan was duly selected from a pool of more than 5,000 nonprofit projects in 170+ countries. Nearly 3,000 donors come together and make monthly donations to keep the Project of the Month going. This extra support means the world to us—and to the children living in Bukit Batu, Central Kalimantan.

Since the government has mandated school closure as well as all training centers, the Vocational Training Centre in Cipanas is still closed for the public. The area in which the training center is located still has a high number of COVID-19 cases. However, with your donations, we have found ways to still run online classes, at least for our English class. This year we plan to extend the online classes beyond English and introduce Financial Literacy, Digital Marketing, and many others. YUM plans to collaborate with third parties in conducting these sessions. We hope to find partners from professional fields, universities, and corporates.

We look forward to continuing our efforts and keep connecting with the youth who can benefit from our programs and we can only achieve that with your continued compassion and generous support.

How a rural training center adapts to online class

Dear friends,

We are all in uncharted waters. COVID-19 is present nearly everywhere, and our community is no exception. While much of this is out of our control, we continue to try to find ways to serve our students as best we can.

After a few months of hoping that the pandemic ends and we can open our classes again, we came to the realization that we had to adapt. Unfortunately, the only course that could be run online is the English course - Computer and Sewing classes needing the students to actually come and use our machines.

We focused on our last batch of English students who did not get to finish their course due to the pandemic. Our tutors decided that they would make videos explaining each lesson based on the modules. At the end of each video, they give the weekly assignment. Each student already owns the English module and can work with them at home, and they deliver their work by sending a picture to their tutors. Of course, this is not 100% successful. Some students have difficulties connecting to the internet, some don’t have working devices or some might be busy with their schoolwork. However, this new online course was greatly appreciated by most, who were missing the fun they had learning English at our training center.

Another fun activity that we were able to organize for our English class was a collaboration with a highly reputable university, Bina Nusantara University (Binus), where for two days, our students had the opportunity to practice their English in online conversation classes led by the Binus English teachers. They practiced self-introduction and had conversations around daily activities. The students were shy at the beginning, but on the second day, they became more relaxed and were much more talkative.

We believe that children, especially those in rural areas, need quality education now more than ever, so we will be participating in this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign on GlobalGiving. The future of skills training

Dear GlobalGiving donors,

On behalf of Yayasan Usaha Mulia, I would like to express how grateful we are for your generosity and support to our "Provide Skills for Indonesian Unemployed Youth" project on GlobalGiving.

Ever since the project was posted in 2012, we have received continued support. This has given us the possibility to help hundreds of young people by providing employable skills such as Computer and English, as well as self-employable skills such as Sewing. Very recently, we increased the funding goal on our fundraising page because though our current circumstances do not allow us to open classes, we’re dedicated to finding ways to serve our constituents and hope to resume our classes soon, be it online or in very small groups. Right now, the only course that is able to run online are the English classes.

With the youth unemployment rate in Indonesia being the highest in Asia in 2019, the pandemic is likely to further increase the problem. That’s why we believe that it will be crucial for our youth to get the skills they need to get a job or start their own business. We are confident that once we get the green light from our government, allowing us to open our classes (even in smaller groups), there will be many students looking forward to these training.

If you are interested to learn more about our project and how we are coping during COVID-19, recently we were invited by GlobalGiving during a Peer Learning Network webinar to present our vocational training work with you and the impact COVID-19 has had on our work. Representing YUM was Yolanda Nilasari (our Program Development and Donor Relations Coordinator), which you might know as our Project Leader on GlobalGiving.
