Training Summary and Progress Update

By Sylvester Renner | Project Leader

Sewing Class - Trainee Hard at Work
Sewing Class - Trainee Hard at Work

Greetings,

We are happy to send to you a training and progress update. The training center at Wellington, Freetown currently has 85 students enrolled. And from this number 45 are being trained in tailoring while the remaining 40 are also being trained in "gara tie and dying", hair dressing and catering. Adult education is compulsory for all.

The training lasts for two years. Depending on the performance of the trainee, the time may be extended. Meanwhile 30 graduated last year and this year only 20 trainees would have to graduate. Students are admitted on a rolling schedule.

At the completion of the course the trainees are placed / sent for on-the-job experience by the center. Representatives of the center visit these host organizations in order to track the progress of graduates. Because of the limited start up kits, not all of those who graduate are fortunate to have one. The rest however are allowed to do their own jobs in the school. The school facilities are made available after school, week ends and during holidays.

GlobalGiving Visit: On another note, on May 5th, trainees had the unique opportunity to meet Britt Lake, the Program Operations Manager of GlobalGiving. Britt spent a day visiting Develop Africa's projects in Sierra Leone. A picture of Britt with Margaret, the Center director is provided below.

Janet and the Sierra Leonean team were honored to host Britt. The visit involved a review and general monitoring of the different projects that Develop Africa has on GlobalGiving. We are happy to report that Britt was happy to see the progress being made and the work that we are doing with your support.

Thanks / Feedback / Upcoming Opportunity: We continue grateful to you for your support which means more to these youth and young adults than you would ever imagine. We would appreciate hearing from you and receiving additional support from you in the next month as continue to enroll new students. Thanks for your support.

cordially and best wishes

Sylvester
