Dear friends, we have news from Gondar! A member of Mensajeros-Spain staff has been monitoring the project in the field and sent us back a big report of the recent situation.
Ethiopia is a huge country with a complex administrative organization, which translates in a complex and difficult sanitary reality. Gondar University Hospital, the reference hospital for Mulu Maternity Center, serves an estimated population of 1,200,000 inhabitants, has 522 beds and 7 operating rooms, as well as an 8-bed intensive care unit. The reality is overwhelming, with hundreds of patients crowded in the corridors, having to lie down on mats on the floor. There is nearly nothing: medical records are written on paper that the patient or their family must manage; additionally, the family has the responsibility of supplying the patient food as well as buying the medicines and medical supplies their relative may need. If any hospital needs improvement Mulu Maternity Center is no exception and there are sometimes non-health aspects that can create many problems.
But despite these drawbacks, the work goes ahead because of the commitment of the health personnel and their dedication. Mulu Maternity Center has been growing since its creation with increasing activity: today an average of 6 babies a day are born in the maternity ward. The prenatal clinic assists 40-50 women daily but there is only need for 7-8 caesarean surgeries per month.
Thank you for allowing us to achieve it!
