Greetings from Mozambique!
This year, we are entering the 9th year of the Mozambique School Lunch Initiative providing nutritious school meals in Mozambique. What started as 3 primary schools back in 2016 has now grown to 62 primary schools, 13 preschools, and 2 secondary schools in 2025. This means more meals than ever (over 11,500 students in primary school, 1,500 in preschool, and 225 in secondary school), ensuring kids have the nutrition they need to grow and learn. We believe that no child should miss school because of hunger, and the whole MSLI team worked exceptionally hard to expand our reach. Yet, there are still many more children in need in the areas where MSLI works, so we hope to grow even more this year!
Why is this important?
School meals are a targeted way of providing an essential safety net for kids, supporting one of their most fundamental needs for and supporting the building blocks for their future. Time and time again, we hear that food is the most important issue. While there are a myriad of other challenges, without food, children aren't able to focus on anything else. That's why this remains the core pillar to MSLI's approach.
When MSLI begins our lunch program at a new school, we work closely with the community to build a strong, collaborative partnership, which is essential for effective delivery of the program. MSLI trains women to be cooks, ensuring the correct amount of food is prepared each day.
Teachers also help with organizing the students, and helping serve during the lunch hour.
At the larger schools, such as Machua Primary School, with over 800 students, it is quite a production to cook huge, 100-liter pots of food over an open fire and have everything ready to serve by 12pm. The whole community pitches in by ensuring the school kitchen always has enough water and firewood to get started by 6am every morning.
There are so many people involved in making this happen, and we thank you for your contribution and generous support. Together, we are creating a future where no child misses school due to hunger.
