Greetings from Mozambique!
We are two months through the 2024 school year in Mozambique, and have served school lunches to students across 10 primary schools every day this year. For many students, having a reliable meal at school is a key incentive to attending every day, and it ensures they have the energy and focus they need to learn in class. Time and time again, teachers tell us that the school lunches make a big difference in boosting overall attendance, which allows the teachers to prgress through the curriculum at a faster rate. This means that overall student learning is increasing, giving kids a better chance to succeed when they get to national exams at the end of the year.
We also work hard to connect our school meals program to local farmers -- enabling additional benefits to reach the local communities where we work. The biggest crop that we purchase is beans, which are high in protein, micronutrients, and a key staple of our school lunch program. Each year, we buy tons (literally!) of beans from local farmers groups and then store the beans in airtight bags to conserve their freshness so they can be used throughout the school year. For these farmers, the school lunch program is a important buyer, enabling them to generate income to support their families.
Our funders -- people like you! -- are essential to making all of this work. Our program depends on a reliable funding stream that enables us to be a reliable source of good food for the kids we serve. Being able to count on a meal at school every day might sound like a simple thing, but in Mozambique it truly makes a big difference in a child's life. Thank you for being part of our journey and ensuring that kids in Mozambique have the nutrition they need to grow and learn -- an opportunity that all children everywhere deserve no matter their life circumstances.
Onwards!
