During the first rehearsal, Xiaolong, dressed in an orange school uniform, held the script tightly. His tongue seemed tied, and his retroflex and palatal sounds kept getting mixed up. After reading two lines, he couldn't help but lower his head and sneak a peek at us, his pointed ears turning bright red. The teachers offered him suggestions for improvement and encouraged him. Xiaolong nodded silently, as if making a firm decision.
This stubborn teenager didn't give up. We often found him in the classroom after activities, repeatedly practicing his pronunciation. Sometimes, he would use a pencil to carefully mark the tone of each character in the blank spaces of the script. Whenever we saw Xiaolong practicing earnestly, we would greet him, but he would often shyly step aside. Perhaps he was thinking about presenting his progress to us with a perfect performance.
On the day of the final performance, Xiaolong sat quietly on a chair at the side of the stage. When the performance began, he cleared his throat gently and, with a tone practiced countless times, smoothly delivered the first line: "I am an indispensable side NPC in the Anger Record..." His voice was like a thread, firmly connecting each scene. Monkey King, Water Drop, and the immortal characters presented a perfect performance to the audience under Xiaolong's voice. The Xiaolong who once couldn't pronounce Mandarin well had transformed the words into warm stories through countless practices.
When the performance ended and the applause began, Xiaolong closed the slightly curled script, a proud smile on his face. This is perhaps the most touching aspect of growth: without the deliberate spotlight, Xiaolong quietly bloomed his own light through persistent efforts.
During the days of the drama and psychology camp, like Xiaolong, every child explored and grew in their roles. Perhaps this is the significance of the drama and psychology camp: allowing every child to shine their own light on the stage and have unlimited possibilities.
