Independent learners

By Shiwani Singh | Associate, Development

"If you give a person a fish, you feed them for a day. If you teach a person to fish, you feed them for a lifetime." With this proverb in mind, I have kept Sustainability at the core of my entire Fellowship. My students are currently in 9th and 10th grade. They will soon leave the Teach for India ecosystem and move to different schools and pre-colleges. I aimed to equip them with the required skill, knowledge, and mindset, which will support them not only to survive but thrive in their lives.

For the last three months, my school team and I have been setting up structures to gradually release responsibility from us to our students. Some of the steps taken for this include students taking up the charge as homework monitor, roll number wise - wherein they send all the details on their Whatsapp group so that students who could not attend school are also informed. We have also created team leaders who ensure that the learning of all students in their group is continuing and provide support whenever required. There have been multiple career conversations held for students to gain more clarity about the way forward.

The transition from virtual to in-person learning has helped bridge the gap during the pandemic years. It also led to an increase in attendance to 100% in the classroom. I have seen students who did not participate in Zoom classes taking charge to guide and learn from others.

My Be the Change Project has been about women's empowerment from the community- working on functional English Literacy, Financial literacy, and employable skills. As we have completed six months of the projects, the mothers are now planning to take up a three-month full-time course on tailoring and join different organizations or start their boutique.

My key learnings from the project have been building relationships and managing diverse stakeholders. It also gave me a chance to understand the Social Business Model in depth.

Lastly, through all these experiences, I have realized how capacity building is an area I want to work on in the future. Hence, I have taken active steps to apply for roles that will allow me to work with people in capacity building post my Fellowship.
