Summary:

This report provides an overview and evaluation of the Feeding Program for Orphans in Zamfara State, Nigeria an initiative aimed at providing nutritious meals to 100 orphaned children. The program, launched in 2023 with support from GlobalGiving, has made significant strides in addressing the nutritional needs of vulnerable children in the state while also contributing to their overall well-being.

1. Introduction:

The Feeding Program for Orphans in Zamfara State was established in response to the growing concern over malnutrition and food insecurity among orphaned children in the State. With an initial target of 100 beneficiaries, the program has been operational for 5 months, primarily funded through onlineindividual donations through GlobalGiving, and concerned offlineindividuals.

2. Program Objectives:

 The primary objectives of the Feeding Program include: 

1. Nutrition Improvement: To provide nutritious meals that meet the dietary requirements of orphaned children in Zamfara State.

2. Health and Well-being: To enhance the overall health and well-being of the beneficiaries through regular access to balanced meals.

3. Education Support: To ensure that children are better able to concentrate on their education by reducing hunger-related distractions.

4. Community Engagement: To engage local communities in supporting the program's sustainability and fostering a sense of collective responsibility.

3. Program Implementation:

The Feeding Program operates through the following key components:

I. Meal Preparation: A dedicated team was made to conduct market survey and procure the commodities thatlocally sourced from community markets, fresh ingredients. Nutritional balance is a top priority.

II. Food Distribution: Food Itemswere distributed to 140 registered less privileged familiesafter verification of their claims.

III. Monitoring and Evaluation: The program conducts regular check-ups for beneficiaries to track their claims and ensure the use of the commodities. Any diversion results in removal of the beneficiary from less privilege register.

IV. Community Involvement: Local volunteers and community leaders play an active role in program implementation, including sourcing ingredients, supervising meal preparation, and assisting with distribution.

4. Achievements and Impact:

Since its inception, the Feeding Program for Orphans in Zamfara State has achieved several noteworthy outcomes:

I. Nutritional Improvement: Beneficiaries have shown significant improvement in their overall nutritional status, with fewer cases of malnutrition reported.

II. Healthier Communities: The program has contributed to healthier communities by reducing the prevalence of nutrition-related illnesses among less privileged families.

III. Improved School Attendance: Children participating in the program have demonstrated better school attendance and improved academic performance because they have enough food for their families.

The distribution of the 2023 Ramadan Food Package as part of the “Ramadan Feed the fasting Muslim Orphans” Project. The food was distributed to Ten (10) Mosques/Islamic Centres located in Gusau, Zamfara State of Nigeria.

Before the commencement of the project, we had project planning meeting on how the project will be, during which it was suggested a category of Centres to be selected where the food package will be distributed.

The goal of the project is to feed 100 fasting Muslims daily for 30 days of the blessed month of Ramadan, thereby improving the lives of Orphans suffering in getting food for Sahoor and Iftaar. The goal of the project was $5,000 and the sum of $3,634 was raised from 64 donors. From the amount raised, the sum of $3,084 was received from GlobalGiving after deduction of about 19% by the Platform. Because the project doesn’t reached it’s goal, the number of beneficiaries was reduced from 3,000 to 1,500.

One Thousand Five Hundred (1,500) Muslim Orphans, Less Privileged and Persons with Disability directly benefitted at the total cost of $3,000 in 10 different centres during the month of Ramadan. Each food package contains Rice, Beans, Meat, Date,Vegetable, Water and Zobo and was prepared at $2.
