Unlocking Potential and Achieving through Reading!

By Tanyaradzwa Chitumbura | Fundraising Officer

In Zimbabwe during Covid 19 Deaf Children were out of school. There were no alternative libraries and online lessons for them to continue with their studies just like their other hearing peers. These Deaf children missed out a lot because most of their families did not know how to communicate with them using sign language. Therefore with the help of donors Nzeve initiated the Read On -Books for 200 Deaf Children. The aim was to provide picture books to the Deaf children to read together with their parents during lockdown. Providing picture books was a way to stimulate Deaf children to communicate with their family, learn to read, be exposed to new ideas and help them to learn more during and after the Covid crisis.

The impact of Nzeve's initiative on the lives of Deaf children through books has been profound. By providing picture books and fostering engagement between parents, caregivers, and Deaf children, Nzeve has empowered these young learners to communicate effectively and thrive in their educational journey.

Through the use of storytelling and sign language, children in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Group have gained a deeper understanding of formal sign language, as well as expanded their knowledge of shapes and colors. The learning experience facilitated by the diverse range of books has equipped these children with essential communication skills, enabling successful graduations from the ECD program.

The transformative power of books is evident in the heartwarming success stories shared by parents and caregivers. Children who were once thought to be limited because of communication barriers have mastered colors, shapes, and effective communication. Equipped with these newfound skills, they are confidently progressing towards primary school, ready to continue their education journey.

The project did not only empower Deaf Children but has also yielded remarkable results for children with developmental delays in the communication group. Through joint reading sessions at home, parents and caregivers have played an instrumental role in helping their children restore their speech. By imitating their parents' words during storytelling, these children have made extraordinary progress in their communication skills, enhancing their ability to engage in clear and meaningful conversations.

One parent said the, “This project has helped my daughter who was struggling with speech development through reading the picture books”.

The achievements of this project are a testament to the generosity and dedication of donors, parents, caregivers, and the Nzeve teachers. With their support, Nzeve has made a lasting impact on the lives of these children, nurturing their potential and creating brighter futures.

As the project comes to an end, Nzeve remains committed to creating a society where the Deaf community is valued. Hence we still have other 4 ongoing projects and we believe that we are able to achieve them because of your support. Together we can strive for the rights of the Deaf community.
