During the first half of November, we are conducting a baseline survey of student reading skills at schools participating in our teacher training program in Nuwakot and Kavre districts.
This is the first time we will be working in Nuwakot, an area deeply affected by the 2015 earthquakes. It’s our second round of training in Kavre.
Last month, we assessed the reading skills of some of the first- and second-grade students in Nuwakot and found that more than 70 per cent of the children had difficulty saying even basic Nepali words. Unfortunately, these results were not surprising.
Based on these initial results, we designed a baseline survey for all of the students, in first through fifth grades, whose teachers will receive our “read-aloud” literacy training. The survey measures reading and writing skills. For children in fourth and fifth grades, the survey also includes a test of cognitive development.
Besides assessing literacy skills, we are also interested to see how the training may improve behaviors associated with literacy development. We will track student attendance and library card usage.
We will supply all of our participating schools with books for classroom reading corners, and some group reading instruction materials, from three local publishers in Kathmandu.
We will conduct our teacher training sessions during the month of December. Then, in Februrary, we will sponsor a literature festival at all participating schools. These festivals were a big success during our training program last year. They gave parents and community members an opportunity to visit the schools and learn more about the value of reading aloud with children.
