To help stock the library shelves at six schools participating in our read aloud training program, we’ve provided grants of 10,000 Nepali rupees (about $100) for each school.
The funds, which each school will match with an equal amount of its own, will allow school administrators to purchase books for the upcoming academic year, replace lost or damaged titles and add to collections in their libraries and classrooms.
The most economically disadvantaged of the participating schools, Jan Jyoti, will receive twice as much, about $200.
The goal of our training program is to encourage teachers to read aloud to their students, improve child literacy and increase awareness of Nepali children’s literature in schools.
Recently we conducted a workshop on how to manage a library and establish routines to allow students to borrow books to take home. During the training, teachers were able to visit an actual school library and observe children choosing books, showing their library cards and the librarian keeping a record of the borrowed book.
Lending libraries are rare in schools in rural Nepal. Typically, books are locked up in a glass case in the principal's office and children rarely have access to them.
The next stage of the program is for representatives from Nepal’s Social Welfare Council to visit participating schools and assess the effectiveness of the project. They will use a survey designed to gather information on children’s literacy skills and their awareness of Nepali children’s literature.
