The 2015 earthquake devastated Seti Devi Lower Secondary School. Eight of its nine classrooms were damaged, and the other one was left in such a precarious state that inspectors ordered it and an adjoining office to be demolished.
Like many other schools we have helped since the earthquake, Seti Devi Lower Secondary had been forced to conduct classes outside on its playground and in a canvas tent, which makes it hard to learn during the winter months, especially for younger children. This particular school provides classes from kindergarten to seventh grade.
We were glad to celebrate five new classrooms, unveiled at the school in early December, just in time for its 155 students to get inside before the colder weather arrived. Together with our local partners, we built five new classrooms—just enough, the school administration said, to get by until more rooms can be built.
We were also proud to support Seti Devi Lower Secondary School because most of its students come from ethnic minority groups. Many of their parents are illiterate, but want their children to receive an education. We believe that families and communities like these need our help most.
Another reason we were excited to help Seti Devi Lower Secondary School is the principal and his staff. Not only do they provide their students with a quality education even under the toughest circumstances, but they share our desire to empower all children, including ethnic minorities, which make up a large percentage of people living in the Kathmandu Valley.
Seti Devi Lower Secondary School is located about 50 miles from Kathmandu in the Simthali village development committee of Kavre district.
