Kyeema Foundation partners with coastal communities in PNG to restore coral reefs and improve food security. We work alongside local leaders to grow heat-tolerant corals in nurseries and plant them to strengthen reef resilience. To support fishing households, we promote village chicken farming, providing an alternative source of income and protein. This community-driven approach helps families adapt to climate change, protect marine life, and build a secure future.
Fishing communities in Tubusereia depend on reefs for food and income, but climate change is destroying these vital ecosystems. Overfishing, coral bleaching, and erosion are reducing fish stocks, making it harder for families to feed their children. Without action, these communities will face worsening malnutrition and loss of livelihoods. We must restore the reefs and provide new pathways for families to earn a living and access nutritious food.
We collaborate with communities to rescue and grow heat-adapted corals in protected nurseries. Once strong, the corals are transplanted into damaged reefs, creating new fish habitats. At the same time, we work with local families to develop sustainable village chicken farming, giving them an affordable and reliable protein source. This reduces pressure on the reefs and provides new income opportunities. Our locally led approach ensures long-term success and community ownership.
