Over 70 community members trained!

By Freda Haihe | PNG Program Director

It has been a busy and encouraging start to the year for Kyeema Foundation in Papua New Guinea, with more than 70 community members trained across coral gardening and village chicken initiatives that are strengthening both reef restoration and sustainable livelihoods.

In February, our team travelled to the remote Conflict Islands in Milne Bay Province to deliver village chicken training in partnership with the Conflict Islands Conservation Initiative. Across Panapompom, East Panaeati and West Panaeati Islands, 39 community members participated in hands on training covering chicken husbandry, flock health, egg management and small business skills.

By supporting households to raise village chickens, communities gain a reliable source of protein and income. This helps reduce pressure on vulnerable marine wildlife, including turtles and sharks, while strengthening food security and livelihoods. The training reflects Kyeema’s integrated approach, connecting conservation with sustainable economic opportunities.

Building on this momentum, in March Kyeema Foundation PNG hosted a three day intensive coral gardening training for more than 30 new coral gardeners from Pari and Taurama villages at Tutu Beach Resort. Participants learned how to establish coral nurseries, maintain coral frames and monitor reef health, before returning to their communities equipped to begin restoration efforts and share their knowledge with others.

This growing network of trained coral gardeners represents another important step in locally led reef restoration, with communities taking an active role in protecting the marine ecosystems they rely on for food, income and cultural identity.

During the training, PAWA TV visited to document the program and highlight how communities are becoming coastal ecosystem guardians for future generations. You can watch the feature here:
