Summary

There's urgent need to reduce Uganda's air pollution to prevent over 3,000 related deaths annually especially among children; and reduce global warming. Kampala city is heavily polluted courtesy of road transport, industrial and domestic reliance on fossil fuels and unclean energy sources amidst weak regulations on emissions. By raising community-based awareness, training and lobbying, this project will improve environmental health for all with focus on saving infants plus our planet.

Challenge

Air pollution is a leading preventable cause of death globally. Infants, in developing nations face it worse. World Health Organization estimates over 90% children to breathe toxic air daily while in Uganda, 60 per 1,000 live births die. Besides climate change, local road transport is the leading cause of air pollution due to heavy reliance on fossil fuels; worsened by poor automobile maintenance practices. Our project will reduce transport-induced pollution in Uganda and beyond.

Solution

At community levels, we raise community awareness about air pollution especially in association with transport, its health and ecological effects while building capacity for mitigation through training. Special attention is laid onto local mechanics, motorists and people with businesses that rely on fossil fuels and unclean energy sources. Protection of children from exposure to polluted air is a key objective but we also highlight the connection between air pollution and climate change.

Long-Term Impact

Over 3million Ugandans especially infants within the Kampala will live healthier lives courtesy of reduced air pollution. The project will step up the fight against climate change as awareness and the general public's attitude towards environmental protection improve. Through policy-maker engagement in collaboration with other entities, there'll be improved government action on the much neglected informal sector transport operations for improved air quality and sustainable transport in Africa.
