Summary

The Maasai plains of Northern Tanzania are - for most of the year - a very dry place. Without water, life is impossible. This project aims to rehabilitate the community water system of Terrat - one of the main villages in Simanjiro District - to ensure that the community has a sustainable and secure source of clean water year-round. This will provide the water essential for human consumption, cooking and washing, as well as for the livestock on which most Maasai livelihoods are based.

Challenge

People cannot survive or make a livelihood in the Simanjiro Plains of Tanzania without access to safe water. Terrat Village, a base for more than 3000 people, had a functioning community borehole 5 years ago. Since then, through equipment breakdowns, theft and eventually vandalism, the system has fallen into disrepair, and water is in short supply. People must pay to buy water from distant boreholes and it is children who have to walk kilometres to fetch and carry it home in 25 litre jerrycans.

Solution

We have surveyed the community water system in Terrat, and the borehole and main borehole pump are still functioning. This project will replace the missing booster pump and piping, and fix the buildings and control systems for the pumps which have fallen into disrepair over the last 5 years. We will also connect the pumps to the new grid supply which has arrived in Terrat recently, to supply the electrical power necessary. Because the grid is not always reliable we will also install a water tank

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide a community supply of water for Terrat village, with more than 3000 people benefiting from the fresh water supply. This will reduce the costs of obtaining water for the population, allowing them to improve their health and livestock businesses, as well as the time (and heavy carrying) required for children to fetch water currently, allowing them to spend more time studying. By renovating the supply and providing security, the supply water will be secure for over 20 years
