Hagamos Más Por Santa Rosalía is a community foundation focused on supporting and strengthening local communities throughout the municipio of Mulegé in norther Baja California Sur, México. This local foundation is funded by a combination of local and foreign donations. It is one of the few small foundations in México authorized to issue certificates of tax-deductible donations.
The foundation is currently working closely with the US-based “Ecologists Without Borders” on sustainable fisheries efforts. Support of sustainable fisheries comes through identifying and promoting the use of national and international best practices, with the objective of substantial improvement in health of the marine environment and the health and well-being of local coastal fishermen, as well as the same for those who depend on them and their products. Achieving these objectives is in the hands of the fishermen themselves using a "bottom up" approach, with both FHMSR and EcoWB facilitating and supporting the efforts.
The foundation hosts an animal rescues center as the centerpiece to its community health and education endeavors, striving to remove sources of disease and improve sanitation in the community through proper management of stray animals. The rescue facility also serves as a teaching vehicle for local schools to assist in instilling community values such as responsibility, teamwork, and animal welfare.
A small store for the sale of artisania has been opened in Santa Rosalía by the foundation to showcase local arts and crafts, as well as support local artisans.
In addition to community outreach, maintenance, cleaning, feeding, and care is given to all animals resident at the facility each month. The facility receives stray and injured animals from local authorities and occasionally from community members.
Starting in January, with the local health department, we began carrying out an average of 10 weekly sterilizations and some at a low cost at a local veterinarian.
In prevention of the summer season, the shadows of the corrals were improved.
A hydraulic installation was carried out, (System of water tanks, pipes and faucets to facilitate the distribution of water to the drinking fountains)
Every month the fumigation program is carried out, application of ivermectin and ectoline by the veterinarian to all pets for tick and flea control.
We have focused on supporting people who cannot take their pets to sterilization surgery with pet transportation.
With this we have ensured that more community pets are sterilized with free government campaigns.
We had an increase in female rescues that were about to become mothers, so our pup population increased.
The free pet sterilization service and another at low cost are reinforced through social networks.
We have been supporting the community of San Lucas, San ignacio and H. Mulegé with the rescue of dogs, since in those locations there is no facility for rescuing pets.
