New Kitchen Almost Complete!

By Tamra Carlson & Zinyengo Kawonga | Co-founders

Old kitchen inside of new kitchen footprint
Old kitchen inside of new kitchen footprint

Last quarter we were honored to receive a grant from the Friends of Malawi nonprofit to construct a new kitchen for our School Feeding Program. We are proud to report that the Thukutu community has almost finished the construction of the kitchen. Soon, the space will be used to prepare the healthy, hot school lunches for the Thukutu Primary School! Our school feeding program has continued to flourish, serving a monthly average of about 500 students per day.

Last quarter we were able to provide farming inputs for the Thukutu community, in order to grow crops for the school feeding program. Unfortunately, this year our community was hit with a severe drought, which means their contributions to the feeding program will be minimal this year. The ultimate goal of this program is to reach a place where the community can sustainably run the program with their own farming outputs, so this drought has caused a major setback in progress towards this goal.

While it has always been on our agenda, we are fast tracking grant applications to raise money for providing sustainable agriculture training for farmers in the community. With global climate change keeping much of the globe on their toes, we see an urgent need to support our communities in regenerative farming techniques.

This is where we could use your help. As we wait for some larger grants to hopefully come our way, we are asking on the generosity of our donor community to help us fill in the financial gap this drought has created in our school feeding program. In order to keep the program running, we must raise the additional funds needed to cover the community's previous contribution.

We are trying to raise an additional $1,000 by the end of September 2023. This will help us buy grains previously donated by the community, as well bring in trainers to work with the community on regenerative agriculture techniques. If you are able to make an extra one time donation this quarter, it would be greatly appreciated by our community. We recognize that this is not always an option and we apprecaite your current support! If you have a network that you are willing to share our appeal with, either via email or social media, please do so.

And as always, we just want to extend our sincere gratitude to our loyal community of donors (YOU!). We really couldn't be doing the work we do without you. Having very little overhead within our small grassroots organization allows us to efficiently use your donations to make a huge impact in our community!
