Ankpa Nature Forest in Kogi State has lost over 70% of its tree cover due to logging, farming, and firewood harvesting. Animals are dying, vultures have vanished, erosion is destroying homes, and extreme heat is causing deaths. Water sources are drying up, and farms are failing. This project will plant 100,000 native trees across degraded land, riverbanks, and village compounds to restore soil, reduce heat, and bring back shade. Support is needed now to clear land before the next rainy season.
Ankpa Forest is disappearing. Over 70% of trees are gone, leaving the land dry and exposed. Animals are dead, vultures are extinct, and erosion is destroying homes. Streams have dried up, and farms are no longer productive. Heat has become extreme, and local reports link it to health problems and deaths. Without trees, the area is turning into bare land that no longer supports life.
We will plant 100,000 native trees in deforested zones, riverbanks, and village compounds. These trees will lower surface temperatures, hold the soil, and help water seep into the ground. Fruit and shade trees will be planted close to homes. Local people will receive training, and land will be prepared in time for the rainy season. A small team will monitor growth and replace dead trees.
Tree planting will restore natural cover, reduce heat, and protect houses from erosion. With time, water will return to dried-up streams, and wildlife may begin to reappear. Shade trees in village compounds will improve living conditions. The forest will recover gradually, providing cleaner air and stronger land for farming. This effort will make the area more stable and safer for future generations.
