Summary

The Cao Vit Gibbon is one of the world's most endangered primates. It is currently found only along the border between China and Vietnam, with an estimated 130 individuals in the wild. Gibbons are highly dependent on trees for their survival. Therefore, in order to protect them, Shanghai Roots & Shoots plans to restore their only habitat in China that has been previously destroyed by human activities by planting trees to provide them with food and habitat.

Challenge

The Cao Vit Gibbon is a critically endangered species with an estimated 130 individuals left in the wild. Due to human activities such as deforestation, farming and poaching, the CV Gibbons were once considered extinct until 2002 when they were miraculously rediscovered in Vietnam. Now, 34 CV Gibbons are living in Bangliang Gibbon National Nature Reserve in Guangxi, China. However, they are still facing a serious situation of the destruction of their living space by human activities.

Solution

The gibbons highly depend on tall trees for their survival. Therefore, planting more trees and keeping them growing to a certain height suitable for gibbons is the critical means of habitat restoration. The project plans to plant more trees for gibbons. It will not only increase the amount of local food available to gibbons but also build them a place to stay. Moreover, the project will work with the nature reserve to monitor and keep the growth of trees.

Long-Term Impact

The project will restore around 100,000 square meters of habitat for Cao Vit Gibbons. We hope that the more spaces we restore, the more groups of Cao Vit Gibbons can be protected. At the same time, by planting native tree species, the unique karst ecosystem of Guangxi and its unique karst biodiversity can be protected.
