From January 27th to 29th, the Spring Forest Survey and Expert Seminar were held in Bangliang Nature Reserve. The objective of this meeting was to evaluate and discuss the progress of the Habitat Restoration of Cao Vit Gibbon project. Co-organized by Shanghai Roots and Shoots, over 20 experts and professors from a variety of organizations participated, including the Rescue Center of the Forestry Bureau of Guangxi, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangxi Normal University, Guangxi Academy of Sciences, Guangxi Institute of Botany, Guangxi Museum, Nanning Zoo, Shanghai Zoo, and Guangxi Minzu University were welcomed to the nature reserve by director Yang Jiang and staff.
The experts traveled by foot to Nong Jiao, Nong Kou, and Nong Yu Mi. At the survey sites, led by Shanghai Roots & Shoots Habitat Restoration Project manager Chen Hanlong, the experts conducted a two-day survey examining the restored habitats to thoroughly understand the current forest conditions in the Bangliang Nature Reserve.
The seminar occurred in the Bangliang Nature Reserve Management Center on January 29th. The meeting included an Introduction to the History and Background of Habitat Restoration for Cao Vit Gibbon, a Review of Forest Surveys, and a Discussion on Habitat RestorationWork. Xu Jialong from the Bangliang Nature Reserve, Professor Fan Pengfei from Sun Yat-sen University, and Secretary General Ding Tao from Guangxi Academy of Botany introduced the topics Ten Years of Habitat Restoration for Cao Vit Gibbon, Research and Conservation History of Cao Vit Gibbon, Vegetation Characteristics in Nong Gang, and Preliminary Exploration of Habitat Restoration.
During the review of forest surveys, experts discussed the issues that came to light over the two-day analysis period. Based on their findings, the experts highlighted areas of improvement, such as the selection of tree species, weed control, and nurturing. In addition, during the last session, experts discussed how to screen the most urgent habitats to restore, design artificial restoration plans based on specific habitat conditions, and monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of habitat restoration work. To conclude the conference, director Yang Jiang delivered a farewell speech underscoring the importance of collaboration and hard work in the fight to restore and conserve the habitat and livelihood of the Cao Bit Gibbon.
