Embrace Relief's Cure Cataract Project in Mali will help people in remote communities regain their sight and independence. We aim to provide 166 cataract surgeries every month - more than 1000 each 6 months - by bringing care directly to those in need. Through our Mobile Eye Unit, we travel to underserved areas, raise awareness, conduct health screenings, and perform surgeries locally, removing barriers of distance and poverty while restoring hope and dignity.
According to our survey in Mali , 59% of people living with cataracts are unaware that the condition is curable through surgery. This lack of awareness is especially high in remote areas, where information and healthcare access are extremely limited. Even when individuals know cataracts can be treated, they face further barriers: no access to screening facilities and, for those diagnosed, no financial means to afford surgery.
We implement a unique approach through our Mobile Eye Clinic to reach remote communities in Mali. First we carefully select target areas first Bamako and plan to expand systematically and then raise awareness about cataracts-their causes, symptoms, and the fact that they are curable. Next, we conduct eye health screenings in these communities, and diagnosed patients are provided with on-site cataract surgeries. After surgery, patients receive post-operative care and follow-up .
Cataract surgery through Embrace Relief's program does more than restore sight-it transforms lives and strengthens communities. According to our recent impact report, 99% of patients regained functional capacity. . By regaining independence and dignity, these individuals can contribute economically and socially, creating a lasting positive impact on their families and the wider community. Over time, this fosters stronger, healthier, and more self-reliant communities in Mali.
