Sports Initiative for Syrian Refugees

Since October it has been an unsettling time in Lebanon due to the war. In southern Lebanon, Beirut and also the Beqaa valley where our school for refugees is there had been strikes on Hezbollah by Israel. Though part of the way many cope is by attempting to continue thier normal activities many day the school was unable to open and all activities were stopped. For many of the Syrian refugees it was only a reminder of what they fled from in Syria and many struggled during this time. So returning to regular schedules after the ceasefire was announced was key. 

Undeterred though our students and teachers continued as did our sports program. Though winter has hit now and it's a bit more difficult the days they can they continue on. 

In a community where good health is a privilege, the TM Zahle Center places great emphasis on physical activities and individual well-being. Each week, all students (boys and girls) have the opportunity to enjoy sports. A young girl named Marwa was forced to be displaced from Syria to Lebanon when she was only 2 years old. Her parents tried many schools and centers but five years ago they registered her at our center and from the first day Marwa and her parents felt the warmth and great education that the center provides. Marwa is a remarkable student who leaves a memory with every teacher, supports her friends, and is full of kindness. 

When Marwa started the sports classes, she faced health problems because she was not used to exercising, had breathing problems, and got tired in a short time. The coaches noticed that she was unwilling to practice and play with her friends but after checking with her she mentioned her issues. With not only skilled coaches but also very kind, they encouraged her to practice breathing exercises and taught her how to do it during sports time and at home. In the next class, Marwa was ready to apply what she had practiced and excited to join her classmates to enjoy the spot class. With coaches checking on her frequently, she was able to be part of the football team that day that won the match where their smile was so bright. 

As her teacher, I noticed that even her energy during the other classes was different, and going up the stairs became easy and not a challenge. With every sports class, Marwa gained more strength and practiced some exercises at her house with her little sisters and brothers. In addition, she never stopped motivating her friends and sharing how confident she became while exercising even on the coldest days or during summer camp. Marwa was full of joy and found a safe place
