Summary

The project will help revitalize the 20 communities of Nishihara Village in Kumamoto. Still busy restoring their damaged properties, 60% of the farming population could no longer work in their paddy and vegetable fields for their daily needs. In line with the government`s goal of restoring the communities, OISCA is dispatching agricultural experts and mobilizing volunteers to optimize the agricultural production as well as helping in the marketing of the village`s agricultural crops.

Challenge

Nishimura Village with a population of 6,000 is adjacent to Mashiki Town (area that had the worst earthquake damage). Still busy restoring their damaged properties, the survivors (mostly elderly) no longer have time tilling their agricultural land (source of income) while common areas such as irrigation drainage and parks are not maintained.

Solution

In collaboration with the other community-based organization and local government of Kumamoto, OISCA will facilitate dispatching of agricultural experts and mobilizing volunteers to help revitalize the village especially the agriculture production. The mobilized volunteers and agriculture expert will help the survivors in their agricultural production during autumn season (October to November) and spring to summer season (late March to September) as well as marketing their crops.

Long-Term Impact

The project aims to help improve the economic condition of the 1,500 population of the 20 communities in Nishihara Village who are primarily engaging in agriculture. With the project, at least 15% of the soon to be mobilized/dispatched 1,000 volunteers are willing to stay, engage in agriculture and help in the further revitalization of the Nishihara Village.
