The radio program Áxenon Ikánwe was born out of the Shipibo-Konibo’s efforts to repatriate their own Panoan language dictionary in the Central Peruvian Amazon, and demonstrate how linguistics, lexicography and Indigenous language dictionaries can move beyond a history of Eurocentric hegemonic colonization to actively promote and assist Indigenous Decolonization Events and Processes.
This work was initiated by members of the Shipibo-Konibo led NGOs ARIAP and Alianza Arkana, who solicited and received permission from the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) to revise their originally published dictionary and has received generous support from the USA-based philanthropic organization Shipibo Joi and people like you.
The Shipibo-Konibo's own on-line dictionary is currently in production at www.nonjoi.org, actively using Indigenous linguistic wisdom for its revision and regeneration. This work has opened local discourses about decolonization -a concept that was notably absent in the region- and has seeded the creation of Non Jói Kóshi Ákaibo (Those Who Strengthen Our Language), a formal Shipibo-Konibo language revitalization program that includes Áxenon Ikánwe and other activities focused on the decolonization and regeneration of the Shipibo-Konibo language and culture.
For the New Year we are applying to the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme, National Geographic, and other funding sources to support the on-line dictionary and the other activities of our language revitalization program.
As an independent radio program, we depend upon the generosity of others to make this possible. Áxenon Ikánwe provides an invaluable service to the Living Shipibo-Konibo language thanks to people like you. Please consider making a small donation today or sign up to make a recurring monthly donation to keep us on the air throughout 2020 and help the continued development of our on-line dictionary!
You can always follow our program −and participate!− Monday-Friday 8pm-9pm (Currently 8pm Eastern for the USA) through the Áxenon Ikánwe facebook page.
Ichabires iráke ‘thank you very much’ to all those who have supported us and those who continue to do so with your monthly donations!
Áxenon Ikánwe! ‘We learn together!’
