Helping Children have fun learning things

Efforts to continue to restore and support childrens programs after Hurricane Irma continue. In this quarter, we have shifted to trying to encourage a preschool to open, run by the local Baptist church, and have committed to paying for supplies and some work to refurbish an existing building. We plan to spend at least $25,000 from some current donations, including this grant proceeds .

Closing down the schools and doing Stay at Home for the COVID virus has slowed down these efforts, but we are continuing what we can. We are also helping children get Kindles and other resources and child sized cloth masks for reopening planned for Monday May 4th, under strict mask and small group only setttings.

We are also using this time to try to put together the fundraising package to purchase a transportation van for the Dynamic Dancers to improve transportation for children in Coral Bay and on St. John to special events and classes. We need about $50,000 to purchase it. Ideas?

Helping Children have fun learning things

During October, Coral Bay Community Council provided a contribution of prizes and supplies to the Carolina Corral, a horse riding stable and large animal resue center in hosting a Family Fun Day for kids of all ages. They got “touching” experience caring for farm animals from chickens to donkeys, and played games. Through GlobalGiving funds, Coral Bay Community Council (CBCC) was able to provide prizes for the children. It was a fun day for all.

My Brother’s Workshop installed two Little Library Units in early November, that were paid for by the grant. One was placed at the Calabash Boom Apartments where many of the Coral Bay children live and the other one near the Coral Bay Fire Station where many children pass by its central location. The Little Libraries are being filled with donated books for toddlers to teens to enjoy. (This replaces our planned cooperation with the government on supporting a bookmobile, that they are not able to complete at this time.)

CBCC will continue to solicit donated books and a regularly scheduled volunteer will refill the libraries and keep them clean on a weekly basis.

December was the start of the Children's Gardening Program with the Dynamic Dancers as the core group. CBCC was able to provide kidsafe gardening tools, gloves, soil seed pods for kids to take home and care for. This experience will teach kids about how to grow their own food and agriculture.

Scholarships have been offered for the Kids and the Sea program. None have been requested yet. That program restarts in January, so we will see.

To continue to support transportation for children's programs, Gifft Hill School was given a grant to help support afterschool transportation from their afterschool programs, as well as pushing them to partner with other programs (although not all have been able to get restarted post storms yet.)

We still have funds to use to help programs. But dollars aren't the only need, it turns out. The Virgin Islands government which controls most facilities is still having difficulty post hurricane in getting agreements in place to allow childrens programs to be run. The FEMA built Sprung Structure to replace the community center in Coral Bay is still not open to be used for any purposes, and needs additional safety work outside to separate it from the surrounding heavily damaged buildings. So progress is slow - although we are ready to help -- including with these funds.

Helping Children have Fun Learning Things

Dynamic Dancers in Coral Bay Labor Day Parade 2019

The summer of 2019 continued to be a challenging one for the people of St. John. But we are recovering, and there were fun things for children to do that challenged them to learn new skills over the summer.

Our project, with your support, allowed children to take a 3-day pottery making class at "Pottery in Paridise" in Coral Bay. The Dynamic Dancers got to go to the University of the Virgin Islands campus, with the grant paying the taxi van bill for transporting them across the island of St. Thomas. The public summer school asked for and received funds for a special field trip tour of St. Thomas. Our project assisted other nonprofits and school programs in transporting children on field trips and paying the taxi fares to the airport for a Cariibbean Cruise by the Dynamic Dancers group - 25 children and their chaporones.

Carolina Corral offered a learning day about horses and farm animals to another summer school group. They are hosting a family day to learn more about the animals and caring for animals, and having fun - Oct. 19th. The grant will help support this.

The Bookmobile project has been delayed by the Government, so CBCC has ordered two "Book Boxes" - to be installed in places children are in Coral Bay, and for "bring some, take some" books. We will replenish as needed.

Now as school has begun, the afterschool and extra programs are still getting started. We have offered to fund safe afterschool program transportation to Coral Bay from this grant. We are also actively working on getting the post Hurricane temporary Sprung Shelter Community Center open. There is a brand new St. John Boys & Girls Club that we may help too.

The gardening program is just getting started this weekend.
