Rok Kern is a project of Children in Families here in Cambodia. We are launching an online opportunity offers a range of courses that can an opportunity to learn more about ethical volunteering, the movement away from orphanages towards family based care and the opportunity to bring students on a journey to Cambodia for educational trip.
Children belong in families. A child thrives when they experience the love and care of parents and extended family members. The UN has declared that growing up in a family is a human right and every nation in the world has committed to prioritizing family-based care for vulnerable children. Since 2016, there has been a growing awareness that many orphanages are using human trafficking in order to attract visitors to sustain their business models.
We believe that orphanages are an example of when short-term, outside-driven solutions are applied to contexts that people don't fully understand. We are an invitation to try to understand this context more. We invite you to learn about the research surrounding orphanages and to come and to learn from the people at the forefront of based care. We ask you to have an open mind to help us solve the problem that is affecting millions of children around the world today.
Long term impacts of our work - we know it can only be positive! With our online courses, we have more flexibility and opportunity to reach a broader audience. Our hope is that our work will carry far and wide and the conversation will begin on a broader spectrum. Impact for children? All good things - healthier development, attachment styles, stability, education, etc. We are excited for what's to come.
