Run a Maternity and Neonatal Unit in Haiti

HHA believe every mother and baby deserve the right to life, with the help of safe and dignified maternal health. Each year we support thousands of women through a range of community and hospital-based activities, as we fight to reduce maternal mortalities globally.

In our most recent story we have baby L, born in our maternity ward at HCBH at only 28wks and 6 days. During delivery, Doctor Dorsanvil (who is also our head OBGYN) noticed that the newborn didn’t have any movement in the chest area, so he quickly handed over to Doctor Barbara (the head Pediatrician) and she started assessing baby L. After thorough examination, baby was quickly admitted to the Neonatal ward for further assistance. L had difficulty breathing and was treated for APNEA (a serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts) where she was quickly placed on a C-PAP machine to help with the treatment. Nurse Louis who was on call during that night said “baby L did good last night but (the next) morning baby was not looking the same, the NICU staff had to work hard to gain recovery.”This was the mothers third child born at HCBH who said she feels her baby is in safe hands with our Doctors.

Thanks to the fast thinking of our healthcare staff, L is stable and doing well in the NICU unit where she is still being closely monitored.

Making the right choices about healthcare for you and your family in Haiti isn't easy. Sometimes there is a choice, and sometimes there isn't, but making the wrong decision can prove to be a tragic mistake. Life here is not like the UK where there is always somewhere local to go if we are in need. Here at HHA we think it's our responsibility to not only provide the health services people need, but also make as many people aware of the choices they have and how to make them. 

We recently met a mother who gave birth to twins at HCBH, our partner hospital. These twins (one boy and one girl) were born on 22nd November 2022 and were immediately admitted to the NICU due to being 8-weeks premature. They were both kept under the care of our medical team in the NICU for 100 days who constantly monitored their progress and ensured both babies received the life-saving help they needed. After much care and attention from our professional team, on 3rd March 2021 both of the twins were discharged in good health. What a joyful day that was!

This story however doesn’t end there. With another young child already in the family, life is very hard for these parents as the father had been forced to go to the Dominican republic to find work. On top of this, after the babies were discharged from the NICU the family was faced with a hospital bill of nearly $4,000 USD. The family worked hard to pay off half of this amount, but were reliant on HHA to provide support for the remaining costs of this bill. 

Since the twins have been discharged, they have been thriving and have attended all of their clinic appointments, showing good progress.
