New ideas for the Unit

By Tim Holmes | Fundraising Coordinator

Our goal in Haiti has always been to improve maternal and infant healthcare. We often talk about adding new services and reaching more people, which is of course very important. But it is also necessary to realise that sometimes the way we are working in the existing services can be improved.

The staff are amazing and are always keen to learn more from others. So when experienced medical staff visit, additional training and experience sharing is always welcomed. But recently improvements have been made internally by the Maternity Unit’s new Head Midwife, Ms Alexandre.

The new ideas that Ms Alexandre has introduced are already making the unit work more efficiently, more collaboratively and ultimately delivering a better quality of care for patients.

Some of these changes include implementing the use of a partogram to monitor labour more closely, changing the allocation of staff to patients and plans to widen training on Neonatal resuscitation beyond the Neonatal Unit meaning babies can be treated immediately by maternity staff when necessary.

These may seem like small changes but in a setting with minimal resources available, these new ideas and ways of working will make a big difference to the quality of care than will be given.

We are sure that Ms Alexandre will continue to make improvements and we welcome her with open arms to the hospital.
