Challenge

The violence against minors especially the girls in Nigeria is increasing at a proportional rate. Many of these cases are reported from poor rural areas, among school pupils who wander in search of water and for convenience when they are pressed. In 2018, a primary 4 pupil of Oka Primary School in Isiala Mbano, Imo, Nigeria was reported to have been bitten by a snake while defecating in the bush. The primary school is old, dilapidated and threatens the safety and hygiene health of pupils.

Solution

RUWAI to collaborate with volunteers, and community members to reconstruct the school building, provide water, and sanitation facilities and basic learning tools. The project is expected to provide rural primary schools with protection from hazards, violence, and abuses especially among girls who defecate in bushes and walk long miles in search of water for hygiene health, while educating pupils about the environment and climate change.

Long-Term Impact

The project will help the benefiting school and subsequently, other rural schools with a healthy, safe and sustainable learning environment to enable them to concentrate on learning and become change agents in the future. It would also provide pupils with leadership opportunities in community service through climate action by acquiring basic knowledge and skills in tree planting. It will contribute to reducing the growing rate of crime such as kidnapping, and violence against minors.
