Summary

This project will equip 80 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in four rural villages with clean and complete Safe Birth Kits. These kits contain essential supplies such as gloves, antiseptic, cord clamps, sterile blades, and clean delivery sheets to help prevent infections and other common causes of maternal death during childbirth. By providing these low-cost but high-impact kits, we aim to reduce the number of preventable maternal deaths in areas where formal health services are limited.

Challenge

In many rural villages in Nigeria, women give birth at home with the help of Traditional Birth Attendants who lack sterile tools and basic supplies. This leads to infections, bleeding, and other complications that often cause maternal deaths. Most of these deaths are preventable with access to simple, clean birth supplies.

Solution

The project will provide 80 TBAs with Safe Birth Kits that contain gloves, antiseptics, cord clamps, sterile blades, and clean surfaces for delivery. These items help prevent infection, reduce blood loss, and make childbirth safer. Training will also be included to help TBAs use the kits correctly.

Long-Term Impact

With cleaner tools and safer delivery practices, TBAs will help reduce maternal deaths in their communities. The kits also build trust between TBAs and families, encouraging safer childbirth practices. Subsequently, this can create lasting change in how childbirth is managed in low-resource settings.
