In Nigeria, bullying and abuse are significant challenges in schools. Studies indicate that between 21% and 82% of students have experienced bullying, encompassing physical, verbal, and psychological forms . Additionally, 6 out of 10 children face some form of violence, and 1 in 4 girls has been a victim of sexual violence. This project aims to create safer classrooms by training teachers and students to recognize, prevent, and address bullying and abuse through workshops & peer support groups.
In Nigeria, many children face bullying and abuse in schools, which disrupts their education and well-being. Studies have found that bullying is common, with estimates ranging from 21% to 82% of students experiencing it in some form. Physical violence is widespread, affecting about 85% of students, while psychological abuse impacts around 50%. Approximately six out of ten Nigerian children have experienced some form of violence before turning 18. This includes physical, emotional & sexual abuse.
This project will work with 50 schools across Nigeria to reduce bullying and abuse. We'll train 200 teachers to identify and address these issues and run workshops for 2,000 students to promote respect and empathy. Each school will establish a peer-led support club and receive materials to sustain awareness. Also, we'll provide ongoing support to ensure the sustainability of these projects beyond the funding period to enforce anti-bullying messages and provide clear reporting channels.
By working with 50 schools across Nigeria, this project aims to reduce bullying and abuse through teacher training, student workshops, and the establishment of peer-led support clubs. These efforts can lead to safer school environments free from gender-based violence, and better academic performance. Continued support and awareness will help build lasting respect among students & inspire other schools to adopt similar practices and contribute to a nationwide movement against bullying and abuse.
