Visit by American Doctor

FICCS (Foundation for International Cardiac and Children's Services), a US non profit organization recently visited Safe Spaces and has become our newest partner.  Led by their founder, Dr. Parag V. Patel, Director of Cardiac Fellowship and Cardiac ICU at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL (USA), the team of volenteers donated hygiene supplies, including much needed sanitary pads, medical supplies, cleaning supplies and a first aid kit for the games. In the slums girls do not have access to basic necessities so the donations were very welcome by the girls,  FICCS has commited to supporting Safe Spaces in 2012 with medical and first aid training to help stop easily preventable diseases which are all too common in the slums due to poor sanitation, lack of clean water and lack of knowledge. Safe Spaces beat FICCS volunteers in a basketball game and are looking forward to a rematch in 2012.

2011 NBA Champions

Safe Spaces senior basketball team won the NBA (Nairobi Basketball Association) Championship in November. The new champions did not lose a game in the playoffs beating Africa Nazerene University and Jumo Kenyatta University. Despite all the obastacles of living in the slums, the girls easily defeated their opponents as they proved that determination can overcome their daily problems. There is no team bus or team meal like the other teams, just girls who have the desire to excel. However, due to their superior performance, Safe Spaces has been promoted to the Premiere League, the top women's league in Kenya.

Dancing Inspires Girls

Dancing, singing, poetry and the arts enable the girls to focus on being girls. Combined with basketball, the arts programs give the girls opportunities to express themselves in ways they otherwise would not be able to. The girls danced in December and were awarded special presentations from FICCS and their partner Fuji Film Kenya for their dedication to improving their community.  Dance has inspired the younger girls to work harder, be more discipline and do better in school.
