Project Renitantely: Livelihood Diversification

By Ioannis Alexandrou | Programmes and Office Assistant

Livelihood opportunities in Madagascar have become extremely limited due to the unprecedented impact of climate change on Madagascar’s agriculture. With most of the community reliant on agriculture to make a living, beekeeping is one of the few livelihood opportunities available to supplement income of rural households. Project Renitantely aims to improve beekeeping as a sustainable livelihood and help beekeepers diversify their income.

To improve access to larger markets, SEED supported beekeepers to professionalise their livelihood. In October 2022, beekeepers were provided with materials to construct supers (a box placed on top of the hive for bees to store honey surplus) and hive frames, enabling honey to be mechanically extracted. Furthermore, essential beekeeping equipment requested specifically by project beekeepers who, including 11 smokers, six suits, and 148 queen excluders, have been purchased and disseminated.

Lack of forage in the region has a negative effect on honey production and can drive bees to abscond from the hive. To ensure the health of honeybee colonies and strengthen beekeepers’ capacity to grow their apiaries, fruit tree seedlings and vegetable seeds were distributed to beekeepers, prior to the grant period in April and July, supplementing the lack of forage available during winter. In September, monitoring of survival and growth rates revealed that all beekeepers were able to harvest vegetables, providing secondary food and income benefits.

In the following months, Project Renitantely will continue to explore ways to improve market access with the potential of partnering with an international exporter. Beekeeping technicians will continue to visit the beekeepers monthly; ensuring beekeepers receive personalised support to develop resilient apiaries. To enable beekeepers to increase their income, SEED will also support beekeepers to expand their apiaries with the provision of subsidised materials.
